…because I love my drafts

By Ann in Online, Question

You know, I’m finding that I’m saving more and more drafts of posts, and just never getting around to publishing them. When I got Symphonic up and running, I decided I’d take this person’s advice and keep “spare posts for emergencies”, which so far has been relatively useful since I find I’m more likely to write four or five posts at the weekend rather than separately during the week.

The thing is, sometimes I’ve written, or started a post, and just can’t bring myself to publish it, because the moment and the “feelings” have passed, I don’t think you’ll be interested any more, I don’t feel the previous post has got enough comments that warrants moving on, or simply because the post’s a piece of crap.

On the other hand, often at the most odd moments, I think “oh, that would be a really good subject to write about”, but (and I suppose this shows how tired I usually am) the next minute I forget all about it, and spend about an hour that evening trying to remember what it was I was thinking about. That happens about once or twice a week, and it is so unbelievable frustrating.

So anyway, I’m going to come clean. At the moment I only have three or four drafts, I think mostly unfinished. They may never be published. But, I’m allowing them to have their five minutes of fame, by being mentioned at least.

  1. My birthday presents. Over a month since my birthday, I’ve taken all the pictures – but I’m guessing that unless I really am out of inspiration within the next two weeks this will never be published.
  2. An account of the birthday party I went to last night – it was a pretty cool murder mystery style game we played. I have a video of my friend, in character, being a sex-deprived… well, I’m not sure what else she was apart from sex deprived. That was her main character point.
  3. What I thought started out as a good idea, and I can’t seem to finish – why do people instinctively think huge age gaps between partners is “disgusting”?
  4. A list of completed and to-do things for Symphonic, that I’ve got from my rev.iew.me reviews.

How many drafts do you have saved? What are they? Why don’t you publish them?

I confess I don’t have any drafts sitting on the backburner. I never have. If I don’t think something is interesting enough to post I just delete it or post it on my LJ.

I recently deleted all my drafts, mainly because “their moment” has passed or I doubt I’ll ever complete them.

If I actually finish writing a post, I publish it right away (unless I’ve already posted that day). I don’t care about accumulating enough comments on the previous post or anything.
