About four years ago in our English lesson, our English teacher got us all to write a letter to ourselves, for us to open when we left school. She probably lost them, but I can still remember most of what I put in mine. Man, have things changed in the past four years. Think about it, four years is a relatively short time in your lifespan, but since then I’ve done so much – been abroad for the first time, stayed away from home for a considerable amount of time, broken up with best friends and made new ones, learned tact (debatable), dated a guy for the first time, done my GCSEs… that is a LOT.
So, I wonder what I will have done in more than double that time. I’ll be 26/27 in 10 years time, I could be married with kids by then! Or, I could be devoted to my career and still single because I’m scared of commitment. My mother favours the former, I’m leaning towards the latter… although the “devoted to working” part is debatable.
My mum got married when she was 29, and had me when she was 31; she insists that she left getting married until later because she hadn’t met the right guy, my grandmother says she turned all the nice guys down in her early twenties because she loved her job too much, and then when she finally wanted a family she had to settle for my dad. Typical mother-in-law talk? Perhaps. If I ever get married, I think I’ll do it in my early 20s.
Then again, you obviously can’t really plan it that much (so I either see myself married by 25 or not married at all). A friend of my sisters’ has her life all planned out, down to the very guy she’s going to marry, how many kids she’s going to have, when this is all going to take place etc. My family and all our friends laugh about this – though probably most of all because the guy she plans to marry is besotted with her, and they’ve had this going on since they were about 11. How convenient for her.
Back to the original subject, I wonder what career I’ll have when I’m nearly 27. If my life actually works out the way I would love, I may have just finished (or already finished the previous year) my post-grad in music/ drama. I could be auditioning for various roles in theatres… or if the money situation in the world is less than perfect I’ll be falling back on my NatSci/ Computer something and going to work in research. I’ll be entering the world of work, finally. My attempt at putting off growing out of student-dom will have finally ended. I will be an adult. If I’m married, I’m even MORE of an adult.
I just got the same feeling I had when I woke up on my 17th birthday. I actually shut my eyes and hoped that being a year older was all a dream, and I’d wake up and still be 16.
SOMEONE FIND ME NEVERLAND NAO. (Having someone as hot as Peter Pan there is a bonus).
So, where/what do you think you will be in 10 years time?
I want to travel Europe! But I doubt the possibilities though.
