I’m a firm believer in the “if Wikipedia says it, it must be true”… uh, movement? Religion? Whatever. I’m a member of the Facebook group. Anyway, contrary to what most teachers seem to think – “don’t use Wikipedia because it’s unreliable and anyone can edit it” – I believe in the common decency of man,1so on 98% of the articles, I believe somebody who actually knows what they’re talking about has submitted all the information. I mean, some of the stuff on there is serious shit.2
My point is that it’s a share and share alike attitude. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Treating people how you want to be treated. You tell me correct information about this and I won’t mess it up, because I’m providing a load of info I don’t want messed up.
See, Wikipedia in itself can restore anybody’s faith in fundamental goodness.
Having said that, I love messing up the not-so-serious information as much as anybody, once in a while. Encyclopedia Dramatica is awesome, as are some of the suggestions for trolling they give (check out the Twilight ones). So was the time we changed our school’s Wikipedia page to say “Mr T is gay”. The teachers keep tabs on that page now. I occasionally moderate the Doctor Who Wiki too, and while it’s irritating if people repeatedly fill pages with spam, it can get funny. Like the time someone changed the page for the un-aired series 4 finale to how it was going to centre around the Duke of Edinburgh or something. Pictures and all. The dude had spent a lot of time thinking up this whole plot about how he was an alien come to take over the world. Yeeeaah.
So what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen done, or done yourself, to a Wikipedia page?
I can’t remember seeing anything weird done on an actual wiki page, but I have seen hilarious screen caps… I haven’t seriously browsed Wikipedia in a while
I heard that a study was done that showed that Wikipedia is just as reliable/accurate as any other Encyclopedia
I trust wikipedia.
There are times when they have false information but it is quite rare, I suppose.
I’m a huge believer in Encyclopedia Dramatica. I use Wikipedia to find out the basics of pretty much everything.
