Baptisms, work and presents

By Ann in Personal

I feel very popular. Within the past week, I’ve got four letters, a package and an early Christmas present – which is a lot for me. I always say that I don’t like surprises, but there is something about them which oddly makes your day.

Three of the letters and the package was to do with the fact that I’m getting baptised on Sunday – word has got around to my extended family, so I have two lovely cards and two new books in light of that. I don’t like that everyone’s making such a big deal out of it (I’m a no-fuss person on special days), so it’s even more embarrassing when I get all emotional reading cards and Bible verses they’ve sent me. The other letter was to confirm what was happening, which made me more nervous – I’m scared about it how you’d be scared for a performance, even though it’s what I want. I have to keep remembering that it’s going to be awesome, and that purely by coincidence the friend I’ve know for longest is getting baptised with me, which makes me feel better.

The fourth letter was a letter from one of, if not the biggest Pharmaceutical company in the UK, to say that I have been accepted onto their work experience programme. Competition for this is incredibly high, and so I am hugely pleased that I even got on, but what makes it even better is that the section which I particularly applied for, Computers, research and ICT, only had one available place, even though there are three different places where you could go, AND I GOT IT! I actually applied for Genetics as my first choice and ICT as my second (there were about 5 Genetics spaces) – so I guess that even though it was my second choice, they really wanted me to do it. I’m especially pleased, because since I filled out the form I’ve had major re-thinks of my career choices, and am now leaning towards the Physics/ Music side instead of the Natural Sciences/ Music side – and this fits in so much better.

You probably won’t find me blogging about it much, since I have to sign a confidentiality thing, saying that I won’t discuss anything I come into contact with, it being research and all. Don’t want people stealing their ideas, etc.

Lastly, on Saturday my friend rang me up, and the conversation went something like this:

“Hey Ann, do you want Twilight for Christmas?”
“Um… yes? Well I don’t mind, why?”
“Okay, you’re getting it for Christmas”
“WHAT? You’re insane”
“Why? You said you wanted it, right?”
“Well yes, but I was having a major fangirly moment, and I didn’t actually expect anyone to take me seriously”
“Well, do you want it or not?”
“YES”
“I can’t find the cover with the apple, they’re only selling the film cover, is that okay?”
*thinks of Robert Pattinson* “ZOMG YESSSSSSSSSS”

She brought it in on Tuesday, unwrapped, and just handed it to me (and handed the other copy she bought to the only non-Twilight-fangirl of our friends. We’re forcing her to read it. She’s not doing bad – averaging maybe three pages a day). Nothing like surprises, eh?

Congratulations on your work experience news! I probably should have done more of that kind of thing when I was in high school myself. I’m sure the experience will stand you in good stead in years to come. :)

Am I the only one who thinks that Twilight is kinda boring?

Congrats on the work experience. I just wish that we have those kind of programs running here in Vietnam.
