I’m not generally one to succumb to advertising, good or otherwise. I am now going to make an exception to this rule, based on nothing but sheer coolness of the advert.
6 months ago, T-Mobile started working on a new, special length advert. The idea was to have something extraordinary and unexpected happen, and secretly film the unknowing public’s reactions, which would obviously include a lot of people calling, videoing and texting about it, as well as joining in and having fun. They would then broadcast it on TV a day later at a time when a lot of people would be watching (during Celebrity Big Brother), along with the campaign slogan “life’s for sharing”.
What makes this so brilliant is what they actually did, and how well it fits in with the slogan. At 11am last Thursday Liverpool Street Station suddenly blasted out a mix of songs ranging from Strauss to the Pussycat Dolls, and the “commuters” who were actually dancers hired for the occasion, one by one joined in. In between shots of all the dancing, you can see people laughing, joining in, and on their phones while watching.
It appeals to people because it not only creates a kind of sense of community as both young and old people are encouraged to join in, but it’s also just fun. And what makes it so effective, is that it sticks in your head, which is what the advert is designed to do – look at me blogging about it!
And the last thing that makes it awesome? The end of the dance mirrors the best scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Congrats, T-Mobile, you’re officially cool.
That is one very cool commercial. One of the best I’ve seen so far.

That is such a cool advert. It makes me think of the Sony (?) bouncy ball one … you know when there’s 1000′s bouncing down the street? Don’t know why. Guess it’ because they’re both pretty epic adverts.

That’s seriously incredible. I love adverts like that rather alot. =] Would’ve paid to have been there. So much fun. =’]
Haha Ferris Bueller. I obviously haven’t watched that film near enough, cause I couldn’t remember what scene you were on about. =/ That films such a legend though. =]
That is awesome! I love watching things like that (have you ever seen Improv Everywhere on youtube?) and the fact that they incorporated it into a commercial is pretty genius.
That’s an awesome commercial!
I actually saw it on tv today. Wasn’t the whole thing though, which sucked a bit. But haha, it’s so awesome.
