Allie’s Song

By Ann in Writing

I have songs for everything – EVERYTHING, and I’m sure you do too. A particular hobby/procrastination technique I have developed is choosing songs for particular chapters of my story, which, incidentally is at 9000+ words. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve already reached the 10,000 word mark since on Saturday I handwrote two A4 sides, but then I went and lost it, so I haven’t typed it out or anything, because I really hope it will turn up. Things are never as good when you try and remember what you wrote/said the first time.

ANYWAY, I have a collection of about 5 songs listed after each chapter title in my plan, mostly that I haven’t listened to regularly as I’m waiting to replay them when I come to writing that particular section. I was stuck for a while on the very first chapter, because nothing particularly happy, sad or dramatic happens – we’re just introduced to Allie, my main character, and I didn’t have a song. Until now – I was listening to it one day, and I realised that it was absolutely perfect for Allie, it described her character in a nutshell. And then, somehow, the song worked it’s way into the actual chapter.

…and turned up the song I was listening to as far as it would go, allowing the screeching guitars, jerky rhythm and high melody to block all other sensations out of my head. Eventually the next song came on, and as I realised it was one of my favourites, I let the bouncy rhythm and quirky music flow over me, giving me a new found optimism for the rest of the day. As the bass came in during the catchy chorus, I smiled, and jumped up the stairs, skipping the queue.

So, I’m not expecting you to guess the first song, as it just happened to be the song I was listening to at the time, to try and drown out everyone around me, which is what Allie is doing here. However, I know that many of you (well, one or two at least) listen to and like the second song, so the challenge is to try and guess what it (or both) is/are.
